COP29 and a Potential Role of Azerbaijan in Future Climate Change Policy Efforts

The December 2024 edition of the IRMO Brief, authored by Gulkhanim Mammadova, deals with the 29th Conference of Parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), held from 11 to 22 November 2024 in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. This year’s COP has tried to address the persistent challenges of global climate action, with the focus on climate finance. An important breakthrough was achieved with the adoption of the Baku Finance Goal (BFG), which commits to mobilize 1.3 trillion USD annually by 2035. Other key outcomes of the 29th UN Climate Change conference in Baku include the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund and the finalization of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The author also analyzes how Azerbaijan, globally recognized as exporter of oil and gas, can become a key player in Europe’s transition to renewable energy with its immense wind and solar energy potential.
